OGT Practice Questions

 

Three types of items are used on the OGT for social studies. These include multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-response items.

 

Short-answer items may ask students to draw a conclusion from a chart or graph; explain what causes a shift in consumer demand; or suggest an effect of rural-urban migration. Student responses to short-answer items receive a score of 0, 1 or 2. There are four short-answer items on the social studies test.

 

Extended-response items offer students the opportunity to demonstrate understanding in depth. These items require students to employ higher levels of thinking such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation and to produce a complex conclusion or multiple conclusions. For example, students may be asked to compare the information presented on two graphs or charts; discuss how immigration to the United States resulted in exchanges of cultural practices; or organize key events leading to a major historical turning point such as World War II. Student responses to these items receive a score of 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4. There are two extended-response items on the social studies test.
